Banyan Pavilion
Banyan Pavilion is a convenience store interior in a historic district of Fuzhou, China, set beside a century old banyan tree. The existing brick structure is retained and reinforced with steel. The original facade is opened by a folding sliding door, which creates a closer connection with the street. White shelving and the edge of the banyan pool form a complete circular space. The ground is paved with permeable stone to keep water available for the tree, and a raised terrazzo platform offers outdoor seating. Hand woven rattan boards cover the shelf grid.
Banyan Pavilion Store by Yi Xiao was featured as an outstanding representation of architectural design by the A' Design Award. Banyan Pavilion Store was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in Interior Space and Exhibition Design in 2021. The A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award is an international, juried, academic and meritocratic design prize that recognizes outstanding design of residential interiors, restaurants, hotels, offices, galleries, retail stores, showrooms, exhibition spaces and more.
