K
K is a villa located in Nasu, Tochigi, Japan. The floors, walls and roofs are treated as thin separate planes rather than joined volumes. Slender columns of 90 millimetres in diameter support the reinforced concrete slabs, so the structure appears light. The underside of each tapered slab is finished with a stainless steel mirror, which reflects the surrounding landscape. Internal partitions are reduced to a minimum, so the rooms flow into one another. The design aims to connect daily life with the nature around the house.
K Villa by Katsufumi Kubota was identified as a grand illustration of architectural design by the A' Design Award & Competition. K Villa was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2022. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is an international, juried, academic and meritocratic design competition that recognizes superior design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
