Tramdepot Bern
Tramdepot Bern is a tram depot with service and maintenance areas in Bern, Switzerland. The strip shaped hall is covered by a light glass and aluminium shell. White glass, a special surface structure and a staggered installation method create an expression that changes with the light. At night the building appears as a bright lantern. A shed roof of steel trusses spans the column free parking area. The structural system allows the depot to be extended in stages on the narrow site with oblique angles.
Tramdepot Bern Infrastructure by Penzel Valier was identified as a creative example of architectural design by the A' Design Award & Competition. Tramdepot Bern Infrastructure received the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2026. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is an international, jury-voted, fair and ethical design prize that recognizes excellent design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
