Hillside Residence Private House

Hillside Residence

Hillside Residence is a private house built on a steeply sloping site in Machida city, Tokyo, Japan. The house faces south and opens onto a large garden. An underground parking area in reinforced concrete also works as a retaining structure and absorbs the height difference of the slope. Above the parking area stands a two storey wooden house. The parking entrance and the square in front of it are set 2.5 metres higher than the road. Wood and stucco are applied by traditional craft methods. The garden recalls the original landscape of the site.

Hillside Residence Private House by Makoto Furihata was recognized as an outstanding example of architectural design by the A' Design Award & Competition. Hillside Residence Private House earned the Iron A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2019. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is an international, jury-voted, fair and ethical design prize which celebrates excellent design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
